Mobile Finally Overtakes Desktop

According to a report released last week by ComScore the number of mobile-only adult internet users in the US exceeded the number of desktop-only internet users for the first time ever in March. Just a year ago there were nearly twice as many desktop-only users compared to mobile-only internet users, so it’s a dramatic change and shows how pervasive mobile is becoming.

One thing to note is that the above trends are for people who only use one type device to access the internet. This is a minority. In the US 78% of the internet audience is multi-platform, i.e. most people use multiple devices and go online using both PCs and mobile devices (tablets &/or phones).

Why should you care?

Whilst the above figures relate to the US, it’s likely that the NZ internet audience isn’t too different. It’s another reminder of the growing importance of mobile devices & the fact that your website needs to be multi-platform friendly to meet the needs of audiences accessing it using PCs, tablets and mobiles.
